This post tries to make sense of reactionary opposition to democracy in our country. The following are sentiments that I could imagine might be expressed by a self-styled Patriot. They do not reflect the views of Hassagot.
“I’ve felt for some time that my country is slipping away. We used to be, you know, Americans. The people who built this country came from places like England and Germany. They brought with them their traditions of hard work and faith. We could say proudly that we were ‘one nation under God.’ Now, I look around and I can’t recognize my country anymore. People who won’t speak English. People who don’t look me. People who are fighting against God, who want to embarrass me for having the same values as my grandparents. Homosexuals and so-called transgendered people. People who want to kill babies. Effing liberals.
“Can you believe what is happening to our country?! Why should I feel embarrassed? In fact, I’m proud and I’m pissed.
“A few years ago, someone stood up and said what I was feeling even before I knew how mad I was. He said it like it is—he told the truth about what was happening to America and what had to happen before we lost our country. I voted for him and—it was like a miracle—he became our president. He gave me back my pride, he made all of us proud to be Americans again.
“Then, supposedly, he lost. How could he have lost? He got more votes the second time!
“Anyway, the stakes are too high. We can’t let America be stolen from us again. We’ve got to make sure that the real Americans are in charge. Don’t give me namby-pamby stuff about voting rights. Something bigger is at stake. If we lose our country, what use are voting rights? What are voting rights worth without one nation under God, the Second Amendment, and the right to life, liberty, and happiness? The Demoncrats would take it all away.
“At this point, we are called on to be patriots. It’s up to us. Save our country—county by county, state by state. So we’ve lost the blue states—even if we can’t get them back, let’s hold on to red states and let’s hold on to the White House and Congress. Let’s make sure that elections can be trusted—it’s so important for Republicans to take as much control as possible of how elections are run and how votes are counted.
“And we gotta keep our powder dry. If we are called, we’ve got to answer. We've got to bring our guns to defend America from her enemies. The stakes are too high to let her be taken away from us. She's being taken from us right now.”
